Getting Started
Investors in People could help your organisation to change its management practices in wide variety of different ways, so your first step when getting started is to establish what your organisation’s key objectives are. We can then show you how Investors in People can provide support to help you achieve the best performance possible against those objectives.

Beard Construction is a good example of the strategic process that you may need to follow. Their assessor ran a workshop with their senior management team, which helped define their objectives. These were to maximise both profitability and customer care, and to develop an organisational model that could be replicated in new locations. In addition to defining the objectives, the workshop also established how these could best be measured; what the people issues were that related to their objectives and which parts of the Investors in People framework could help Beard successfully achieve their objectives.

Having determined what their objectives are, some organisations decide that they need extra support and your Investors in People Centre can provide you with an adviser who will give you support and advice, usually to help your organisation address a particular development area. Other organisations work with our online advice tool Interactive – as this has exercises, good practice tips and templates that are all free online.

Your Investors in People Centre can also give you advice on whether you are ready for assessment. Some organisations want to be assessed immediately, to set a benchmark of their current performance. Generally most employers are able to be assessed within a year of when they first contact their local Centre.
