Getting started

Q: Can I implement Investors in People myself?
A: The Investors in People framework is written in plain English so that you can check for yourself how your organisation measures up against the evidence requirements.

You can also access our free online business support tool, Interactive, which features a simple 20 question diagnostic which will indicate how well your organisation is performing against the Investors in People Standard. Interactive can also take you on a step by step tour through The Standard, so you can get a good impression of what Investors in People is all about from this free online tool. Click here to access Interactive.

Most organisations find it helpful to talk to their local Investors in People Centre – as a quick conversation or meeting can often establish what the best route is for their organisation and also clarify what the best options are.

Q: How long will it take to become an Investor in People?

A: This depends on the degree of change you want to make in your organisation and how quickly you can put it into practice. Most organisations can achieve Investors in People status within a year, whilst with others it may take up to 18 months. The best way to establish likely timings is to get in touch with your local Investors in People Centre. You can then establish what your objectives are, whether there are development areas that need to be addressed and draw up a timeline for successfully preparing for your first assessment.

Q: What if my organisation is multi-sited across the UK or international?

If you are a multi-sited UK based organisation then you need to contact the Investors in People Centre which is closest to your head office. Click here to find your nearest Centre.

If you are an international organisation, then you need to contact one of our International Centres. Click here for more information.

Assessment/Review

Q: Will the assessor understand our organisation?

A:  Assessors are chosen for their broad business background, and they generally work as independent business consultants. Many will specialise in working with organisations from your sector. However some organisations prefer to have assessors who have experience of other business sectors. It’s best to discuss this with your local Investors in People Centre. The work of assessors is quality assured and their development and training is overseen by their Centre.

Q: Do I get more than one chance to meet the Investors in People Standard?

A:  Yes, if the assessor feels that there is more work to be done before you meet the Investors in People Standard, they will give detailed feedback, which will help you to plan further development and decide an appropriate timescale to continue the assessment.

Q: When should I come forward for assessment?

A:  Your organisation can request an assessment at any time. Some organisations have assessments immediately to receive a benchmark of their current performance and establish which areas of development they need to focus on. Most organisations aim to be assessed after they have been working with Investors in People for a year or 18 months.

Your Investors in People Centre will be able to advise on when you are ready for an assessment but ultimately it is your decision on when you want to have your first assessment.

Q: How long does my recognition as an Investor in People last?

A: Investor in People recognition is awarded indefinitely, subject to regular reviews no more than three years apart. Within this time frame, organisations can choose how frequently they wish to be reviewed.

Q: What happens if I am not ready for assessment when I thought I would be?

A:  You have two choices. You can put the date of your assessment back. Or alternatively, if you are not worried about achieving recognition first time, you can still be assessed and this will establish what development areas need more work.

Q: What should I do if my organisation has merged?

A: If your organisation has merged since achieving Investor in People status, then it is likely that you will need to have an assessment again in order to maintain your status and continue to display the logo. To clarify your options, the best thing to do is to talk to your Investors in People Centre.
